The French press is probably one of the most if not the most ubiquitous coffee makers since it’s found easily in most homes & offices. To achieve its full countenance & taste, it’s preferable to decant it immediately to avoid it becoming bitter. It takes but a few minutes to brew.

What you need
Coffee
French peas
Grinder
Kettle
Scale
Timer
Wooden poon
Step1
|
Freshly grind 20g coffee. The grind should be coarse, slightly smaller than sea salt. |
Step2
|
Tip out the water, and put the coffee in the base of the French press. Add 100 ml of hot water. |
Step3
Use water just off the boil.
Wait 30 seconds, then give it a stir with one of the spoons.
You’ll notice bubbles form as the beans release gas: this is called the bloom.
Step4
| Pour in the remaining 225mL of water. |
Step5
|
Wait for 4 minutes. Watch closely and you’ll notice coffee grounds drifting to the bottom: this happens as each ground becomes saturated with water. |
Step6
|
While you’re waiting, you can warm up your mug with hot water. A warm mug will keep your coffee hot longer. |
Step7
|
Use a spoon to break the crust on top of the brew. This will saturate more grounds, which will fall to the bottom. |
Step8
|
Rinse both spoons and use them to scoop up any large grounds on the top surface of the brew You don’t need to be precise; we’re most concerned with big grounds. |
